Welcome back Visitors! Or else, should I welcome back myself for finally presenting a long due post? Anyway, what ever it is, let us come straight to the point—2 States—Chetan Bhagat’s latest novel!
As you might well aware by now that reviewing Chetan has become a fascination for me. It all started years back with one friend suggesting to have a look at Five Point Someone; and the rest needed no further advocating! I have overcome my antipathy for reading anything that is not a century old; and moreover, I started to enjoy Chetan!
To be honest, I was completely unaware of 2 States before getting a chance look at it at one book-vendor’s; and did not think twice to pick one copy up. I came back home—got my regular activities finished and started to delve deep into the pages.
Few hours passed…the darkness of night thickened…the story of Krish and Ananya became more and more groovy.
I got the last page turned…looked at the clock— 9’o clock it said, but not at Night— it was the next Morning!
Yes! I upturned the pages all night through!
But is it worth depriving of your good night’s sleep though— is a question valuing a million dollar! And to answer it in one liner— It Is Not!
Chetan is humorous, and is a pleasure reading like all his previous three books (though I have not reviewed The 3 Mistakes of My Life, I have carefully gone through it), the narrative has pace enough to grab and sustain one’s attention all the time; but definitely its not worthy enough to pass a night all sleepless for the sake of reading it!
The story starts at IIMA’ Ahmedabad, where the chief protagonists—Punjabi Krish meets with Ananya—a Tamil Brahmin. The plot develops with, as you guess, their willing to get married despite of their differences of cultural heritages and food habits; and it thickens further by their attempts to make their conservative families and relatives happily give permission to this Inter-Caste, Inter-State marriage!
What they get at the end is a question irrelevant to discuss here—that would act as a spoil-sport to the future readers; I would rather concentrate on a different issue—Credibility!
After meeting at the IIMA Campus, they became “just friends”…started to study together till late hours of night in Ananya’s hostel room before they develop another sort of chemistry between them; and thus give birth to the critical question of Credibility.
Is there no Hostel-Super sort of posts in those Hostels in IIMA? A boy is regularly “studying” behind a locked door in a Ladies-Hostel-Room with a girl till
Come Readers; let us promise with our fingers crossed not to ask Chetan any embarrassing questions considering the Credibility of his narrative!
But most humbly I would like to ask Chetan one question:
Why Are You So Obsessed With Pre-Marital Sex???
Your Characters do that all the time…they did it in Five Point Someone…they did it in One Night @ The Call Centre…the same thing is repeated in The 3 Mistakes of My Life…and now in 2 States you have surpassed all the earlier editions with this Two-Year-Long Live Together episode!
Its either you are crazy…or have taken a holy oath to drive us crazy!
You are a fantastic story-teller no doubt…but please Chetan, show some respect to your otherwise fantastic story-telling ability! And for God’s sake, don’t drive us Crazy!
